The next time you host a kid’s birthday party, invite your guests to wrap up a pre-loved toy or book that they’d like to pass along to the birthday kid. By embracing re-gifting, kids get something new-to-them and we give items a second life!
ShareParty is a non-profit initiative aimed at inspiring families to embrace regifting gently used items over acquiring brand new ones. In an age of excess, we champion the strength of sharing, swapping, and sustainable play.
About 90% of toys are made of plastic and 40 million of them are discarded into landfills annually, accounting for 6% of all landfill plastics globally.
The Hidden Cost of Toys
There are 3 billion toys purchased in the US every year. 90% of them are made from plastics, and 80% end up in landfills, incinerators or oceans. These toys are used for only 6 months on average before being discarded.
If every child in the US under 10 gets just 5 new toys from their birthday party, that’s 193.5 million toys a year.
The carbon footprint of these toys ≈ 774,000 metric tons of CO₂e.
